Early Development and Academic Training
Born July 24, 1943, John Bryson attended Cleveland High School in Portland, Oregon, graduating in 1961. He pursued his higher education in California and Connecticut, earning a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1965. In 1969, he completed his legal training with a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School, which served as the foundation for his future policy and corporate roles.

In 1970, Bryson helped launch the Natural Resources Defense Council while serving as its legal counsel. His interest in regulatory oversight led him to chair the California State Water Resources Control Board from 1976 to 1979. He later acted as president of the California Public Utilities Commission until 1982. Following a tenure at the law firm Morrison & Foerster, he transitioned into the utility sector.
Leadership at Edison International
Bryson joined Edison International in 1984, eventually serving as its chairman, president, and chief executive officer. During his time at the parent company of Southern California Edison, he maintained board roles at The Boeing Company, The Walt Disney Company, and the W. M. Keck Foundation. He retired from his position at Edison International on July 31, 2008.
Cabinet Appointment and Resignation
President Barack Obama nominated Bryson to lead the Department of Commerce in May 2011. Following Senate confirmation, he took office on October 21, 2011. In June 2012, two vehicle collisions in San Gabriel and Rosemead, California, prompted an investigation that revealed the incidents were caused by unexpected seizures. Consequently, he resigned his position on June 21, 2012, to prevent further distractions to the department's mission.
