The pseudonym Joe Hisaishi was adopted by Mamoru Fujisawa as an homage to the American musician Quincy Jones, combining the phonetic similarities of the names into Japanese kanji. Born in Nakano in 1950, he emerged as a multifaceted musician whose career spans orchestral composition, conducting, and piano performance across dozens of international film and television projects.
Early Development and Education
Born as Mamoru Fujisawa, he began violin training at age four using the Suzuki method. His formative years included frequent film screenings with his father, fostering an early interest in cinema. After graduating from Suzaka High School, he enrolled at the Kunitachi College of Music in 1969 to major in music composition. During the 1970s, he experimented with electronic music, minimalism, and styles popularized by the Yellow Magic Orchestra before releasing his first album, MKWAJU, in 1981.

In 1983, Hisaishi was commissioned to create an image album for Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This launched a long-term partnership with Studio Ghibli, leading to scores for major productions including My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. In 2008, he marked 25 years of this collaboration by conducting a massive concert featuring over 1,200 musicians at the Budokan.
Film and Directorial Pursuits
Beyond animation, Hisaishi established a significant body of work in live-action cinema. He collaborated extensively with filmmaker Takeshi Kitano on titles such as Hana-bi, Kikujiro, and Brother. In 2001, he transitioned into directing with the feature film Quartet, for which he also composed the score and wrote the script. His work extended to international projects, including the soundtrack for the Academy Award-winning film Departures in 2008.
