Joseph Thomas Elliott, born in 1959 in Sheffield, rose to prominence as the lead singer and a founding member of Def Leppard. Educated at King Edward VII School, his career began in 1977 after a chance meeting led to his recruitment as a vocalist. He remains a key figure in the history of British hard rock.
Formation of Def Leppard
In November 1977, Elliott encountered Pete Willis at a bus stop, leading to an audition for the band Atomic Mass. During this session, his role shifted from guitarist to lead singer. Elliott devised the name Deaf Leopard, which was eventually modified to Def Leppard. The group quickly became a significant entity within the new wave of British heavy metal, securing a contract with Phonogram/Vertigo following a management change to Peter Mensch.
