Jim Rohn

American motivational speaker, businessman and bestseller author (1930–2009)

Emanuel James Rohn reached millionaire status by age 31, lost his entire fortune two years later, and eventually rebuilt his wealth to become a prominent figure in the field of personal development. Operating primarily within the United States, he spent his career as an entrepreneur, writer, and speaker, influencing multiple generations of professionals through his direct approach to success.

Early Employment and Direct Sales

Born in 1930 in Yakima, Washington, Rohn grew up on a farm in Caldwell, Idaho. He attended college for only one year before entering the workforce. His early professional career began at Sears Holdings Corporation, where he served as a human resource manager. His transition into direct sales occurred after attending a lecture by John Earl Shoaff. In 1955, Rohn joined AbundaVita as a distributor, later moving to Nutri-Bio in 1957. Under the mentorship of Shoaff and other founders, Rohn expanded his role, eventually overseeing the organization's expansion into Canada in 1960.

Transition to Public Speaking

Following the dissolution of Nutri-Bio in the early 1960s, Rohn accepted an invitation to address his local Rotary Club. This engagement sparked a demand for his speaking services, leading to his first public seminar at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1963. Throughout the 1970s, he maintained a rigorous seminar schedule, notably working with Standard Oil and participating in a business venture called Adventures in Achievement. His output during this period included numerous seminars and workshops focused on personal development.

Mentorship and Influence

During the late 1970s, Rohn provided mentorship to several individuals who went on to significant careers, including Herbalife International founder Mark R. Hughes and life strategist Tony Robbins. His influence extended to authors and lecturers such as Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield, Brian Tracy, Darren Hardy, and T. Harv Eker. Rohn's professional recognition included receiving the 1985 National Speakers Association CPAE Award for speaking excellence.

Publications and Final Years

Rohn produced 17 works across written, audio, and video formats, including 'The Power of Ambition', 'Take Charge of Your Life', and 'The Day That Turns Your Life Around'.
