Professional Origins
Born in 1952, Ratcliffe spent his early childhood in a council house before moving to East Yorkshire. Following his graduation in 1974, he briefly worked at BP. After an accounting stint at a pharmaceuticals firm and time at Esso, he earned an MBA from the London Business School, funded by his employer. His later career included a role at the private equity firm Advent International before he co-founded Inspec, which served as the precursor to his major industrial project.

Ratcliffe founded INEOS in 1998, using high-yield debt to acquire undervalued assets from major corporations like ICI and BP. By 2006, the acquisition of Innovene provided the company with extensive refining and petrochemical infrastructure across Europe and Canada. The group later expanded its polymer operations, specifically in PVC production, through the purchase of Norsk Hydro's business in 2007. The company's headquarters have moved between Hampshire, Rolle, and London.
Diversification and Automotive Projects
Beyond chemicals, Ratcliffe launched INEOS Automotive to address the gap left by the Land Rover Defender. Partnering with BMW and Magna Steyr, he oversaw the development of the Grenadier Station Wagon, which entered production in 2022, followed by the Quartermaster utility vehicle. His commitment to energy transition projects includes a planned €2 billion investment in green hydrogen electrolysis across European sites, headquartered in the United Kingdom.
Sports and Ownership Stakes
Ratcliffe has integrated his business interests with professional sports. He acquired the Swiss football club Lausanne-Sport in 2017 and Nice in 2019. In February 2024, he became a minority shareholder in Manchester United, gaining oversight of sporting operations. His personal involvement in sports extends to the 2019 INEOS 1:59 Challenge, where he supported Eliud Kipchoge’s sub-two-hour marathon attempt.
