A single loan of forty thousand dollars from a local bank manager helped transform a fledgling Pontiac dealership into the Jim Pattison Group, currently Canada’s second-largest privately held company. Today, this massive conglomerate encompasses twenty-five distinct divisions ranging from food distribution and forestry products to international media holdings, all under the singular control of its Vancouver-based founder.
Early Employment and Education
Born in Saskatoon in 1928, James Allen Pattison moved to East Vancouver with his family at age six. During the Great Depression, he supported his father by assisting with piano repairs. His early work life included roles as a fruit picker, newspaper delivery boy, and a hotel page. After graduating from John Oliver Secondary School in 1947, he held various labor positions before discovering his aptitude for vehicle sales. He attended the University of British Columbia and the Sauder School of Business, though he left just before completing his degree requirements.

In 1961, Pattison secured a substantial loan from a Royal Bank branch manager to establish his first dealership. He augmented this capital by liquidating personal assets and securing further financing from General Motors. This venture served as the foundation for an expansive business empire. His portfolio grew to include diverse interests such as Overwaitea Foods, Save-On-Foods, and Quality Foods. By 2018, his organization maintained twenty-five car dealerships and managed extensive agricultural equipment sales through Pattison Agriculture.
Media and Global Acquisitions
Pattison expanded into the media sector through the purchase of the radio station CJOR. By 2018, his broadcast division operated forty-three radio stations and three television stations across Western Canada. His corporate reach extended internationally through the 2008 acquisition of the Guinness World Records organization. Additionally, his influence has spanned the forestry sector, where he maintained a significant stake in Canfor and led governance changes to improve company performance.
Civic Contributions and Public Service
Beyond his private ventures, Pattison led the organization of Expo 86 in Vancouver, serving as chief executive officer and president of the corporation for five years without compensation. He also contributed to the committee for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. His professional and public achievements have been recognized through numerous honors, including the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia, and induction into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2018.
