A gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics solidified Jemima Sumgong's position in distance running history, marking the first time a Kenyan woman claimed victory in the event. Born in 1984 in Nandi County, she spent over a decade competing globally before her career was curtailed by significant anti-doping violations that resulted in a long-term suspension from the sport.
Early Career and American Circuit
Sumgong began competing abroad in 2004, initially gaining experience in half marathon events like the Gothenburg Half Marathon. By 2005, she transitioned to the American road circuit, securing wins at the Ogden Newspapers Classic Half Marathon and the Maggie Valley Moonlight Run. Her 2006 season included victories at the Get In Gear 10K in Minneapolis and the Wharf to Wharf 6-Miler. That same year, she won her marathon debut in Las Vegas with a time of 2:35:22.

In 2009, Sumgong joined the Kenyan Armed Forces and took a hiatus from racing. She returned to competition following the birth of her daughter in 2011, winning the Castellón Marathon. The 2012 Boston Marathon saw her finish second, though she subsequently tested positive for prednisolone. While she faced an initial ban, the IAAF cleared her in September 2012, citing permitted medical use. She continued to lower her personal best, achieving a time of 2:23:27 at the 2013 Rotterdam Marathon and later 2:20:48 at the Chicago Marathon.
Olympic Success and Doping Sanctions
Sumgong won the 2016 London Marathon despite falling during the race. Later that year, she achieved a time of 2:24:04 in Rio de Janeiro to secure Olympic gold. In 2017, she tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO), leading to an initial four-year suspension. Investigations revealed she had fabricated medical records and provided false information regarding her whereabouts. These actions resulted in her ban being extended to eight years, effectively barring her from international competition until 2027.
