Early Pursuits and Training
Before entering the ring professionally, Mace worked as an apprentice sawyer and a violinist. He developed his pugilistic skills under the guidance of Nat Langham at the Rum Pum-pas club located near Charing Cross Road. Mace secured several notable victories during the 1850s, including a win over Bob Slack in 1855 and a subsequent triumph against Bill Thorpe in 1857. After competing for various English titles, he defeated Sam Hurst on 18 June 1861 at Medway Island to become the Heavyweight Champion of England. This victory demonstrated his ability to overcome larger opponents through superior agility and calculated offensive maneuvers.
Defending the Title
In his first title defense against Tom King on 28 January 1862 at Godstone, Mace engaged in a demanding 43-round bout lasting 68 minutes. Despite suffering significant facial injuries, he utilized tactical footwork and decisive striking to finish the fight. His career remained defined by his ability to adapt to various opponents under the London Prize Ring Rules throughout the 1860s.
