Early Life and Education
Born on October 28, 1979, in Merseburg, East Germany, Karim moved with his family to Neuss before relocating to Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1992. He graduated from Saint Paul Central High School in 1997. Following secondary school, he enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. While he left campus early to pursue professional opportunities, he later completed his bachelor's degree in computer science. Karim served as an intern at Silicon Graphics, where he contributed to 3D voxel data management and volume rendering, including data for the Visible Human Project. During his subsequent employment at PayPal, he developed various core components for the platform, most notably its real-time anti-fraud system. At PayPal, he met Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, with whom he would later collaborate on the development of YouTube.
Founding YouTube and Google Acquisition
The YouTube project began in early 2005. Karim opted to serve as an informal adviser while pursuing graduate studies at Stanford, which resulted in him holding a smaller equity stake compared to Hurley and Chen. When Google acquired YouTube in 2006, the transaction provided Karim with 137,443 shares of stock, valued at approximately $64 million at the time of the closing stock price. He later returned to his alma mater, the University of Illinois, to speak at the 2008 commencement ceremony.
Ventures and Public Critique
In 2008, Karim established the venture fund Youniversity Ventures, now known as YVentures, alongside partners Kevin Hartz and Keith Rabois. The firm invested in companies including Reddit, Palantir, and Eventbrite. Additionally, he was an early investor in Airbnb. Beyond his investment work, Karim has frequently used the video description feature of his inaugural "Me at the zoo" upload to publicly register his dissent regarding YouTube platform updates, including changes to commenting systems and the removal of dislike counts.
