Javier Mascherano

Javier Mascherano began his trajectory in San Lorenzo, Argentina, eventually securing 147 appearances for his national team and becoming the second most capped player in the nation's history. Throughout his career, he operated as a defensive midfielder and centre-back, moving through clubs in South America, Europe, and Asia before shifting his focus to coaching at the professional level.

Early Career and South American Tenure

Rising through the youth ranks at River Plate in Buenos Aires, Mascherano debuted professionally and secured the 2003–04 Argentine Primera División title. His performance drew international attention, leading to a 2005 transfer to the Brazilian club Corinthians for US$15 million. Despite a foot fracture that sidelined him for six months during the 2005 season, he contributed to the team's Brazilian Série A championship victory.

European Transitions

In 2006, Mascherano joined West Ham United under complex ownership conditions involving Global Soccer Agencies and Mystere Services. His time in London proved brief and contentious. In 2007, he moved to Liverpool following FIFA clearance, where he featured in a UEFA Champions League final. He later transitioned to FC Barcelona in 2010, where he accumulated five La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies, and two FIFA Club World Cups over an eight-year period.

International Milestones

Between 2003 and 2018, Mascherano represented Argentina across five Copa América tournaments and four FIFA World Cups, including the 2014 final. He served as the national team captain from 2008 to 2011. Notably, he achieved a historic double gold medal in the Summer Olympics, winning in both 2004 and 2008, the first male footballer to do so since 1968.

Transition to Management

Following his retirement from professional play in 2020 after spells with Hebei China Fortune and Estudiantes, Mascherano pivoted to coaching. He managed the Argentina under-20 and under-23 squads, overseeing the latter during the 2024 Olympic games. In late 2024, he took the head coach position at Inter Miami, leading the club to secure the MLS Cup in 2025.
