Javier Aguirre Onaindía entered the professional football landscape in 1979 as a midfielder for Club América. Known widely by the nickname El Vasco, he parlayed his parents' Basque heritage into a Spanish passport, a tool that significantly eased his transition from the domestic Mexican league to a long-standing managerial career across several European and international stages.
Early Career and Domestic Success
Aguirre began his playing journey at Club América, interrupted briefly by a stint with the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1980. Upon returning to Mexico, he contributed to the 1983–84 championship title for Club América. His playing career also included time with Atlante, Osasuna in Spain, and Guadalajara, where he recorded over 100 appearances before retirement. Internationally, he earned 59 caps for Mexico and featured in the 1986 home tournament, where he became the first Mexican player dismissed from a fixture in that competition.

Management began at Atlante and evolved at Pachuca, where he secured the Invierno 1999 title. In 2001, he replaced Enrique Meza as head of the Mexico national team. Under his direction, the squad navigated a difficult qualification period to participate in international tournaments in 2002 and 2010. His tenure involved managing the side during the 2001 Copa América, where they finished as runners-up to Colombia.
European Tenure
Aguirre established a career in La Liga, most notably at Osasuna and Atlético Madrid. At Atlético Madrid, his arrival in 2006 preceded a period of consistent top-table performance and European qualification before his departure in February 2009.
International Assignments
Beyond his multiple stints with Mexico, Aguirre accepted roles managing the national squads of Japan and Egypt. His second period leading Mexico, which began in 2009, included winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup and successfully navigating the qualification process for the 2010 global tournament. His career trajectory continues to include major international responsibilities through the 2026 cycle.
