Early Development and Titles
Born in Kraków in 1998, Duda demonstrated immediate aptitude for competitive chess. His early trajectory included first-place finishes at the 2007 U8 Polish Youth Championship and the 2008 World Youth Chess Championship, which earned him the FIDE Master title. By 2012, his international standing grew as he claimed the European Youth Chess Championship in the under-14 category. His performance that year was punctuated by a victory at the Polish Chess Championship and a strong showing at the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi, where he helped secure fourth place for the Polish national team. His tactical consistency was further demonstrated in December 2018, when he finished second at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Saint Petersburg, finishing just behind Magnus Carlsen.
Championship Successes
The year 2021 proved to be a career peak. During the Chess World Cup, Duda eliminated Alexander Grischuk, Vidit Gujrathi, and Magnus Carlsen before defeating Sergey Karjakin in the finals to claim the title. This win earned him a spot in the 2022 Candidates Tournament, where he finished in seventh place. Beyond classical formats, he demonstrated mastery in rapid and blitz disciplines, winning the European Blitz Chess Championship in Katowice and the Oslo Esports Cup in 2022. For his achievements, he was granted the Gold Cross of Merit.
Record Against World Champions
Duda gained widespread attention for his ability to defeat reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen. His first rapid victory occurred at the Lindores Abbey Rapid Chess Challenge in May 2020. Later that year, at the Altibox Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger, he ended Carlsen's 125-game unbeaten streak in classical chess. These victories were supplemented by consistent performances in the Champions Chess Tour, including a win at the Aimchess Rapid event in October 2022.
