The Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové remains a defining structure of Jan Kotěra’s career, completed between 1908 and 1912. Operating across the late nineteenth century and the early modern period, he shaped the development of Czech architecture as an architect, urban planner, and educator while navigating the changing political landscape of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Early Education and Influences
Born in Brno in 1871, Kotěra pursued formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. During his time in the capital, he studied under the prominent master Otto Wagner. This period of education provided the structural foundation for his later transition from late nineteenth-century styles toward the burgeoning early modernism movement.

Upon returning to Prague in 1897, Kotěra became a central figure in the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. His design work included the Peterka House on Wenceslas Square, the National House in Prostějov, and the Trmal Villa in Prague. His practice frequently involved collaboration with sculptors such as Jan Štursa, Stanislav Sucharda, and Vojtěch Sucharda. He also contributed designs to the Bata company, including the factory and houses at East Tilbury, Essex, and a villa for Tomáš Baťa in Zlín.
Pedagogy and Professional Legacy
As an educator, Kotěra held a significant role in training the subsequent generation of practitioners. Among his students was Josef Gočár, who later advanced Czech modernism. Kotěra held memberships in the Czech Academy of Science and Art and maintained a broad professional scope that included painting, graphic art, and scenography. His final significant project, the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague, was constructed posthumously between 1924 and 1927.
