Early Development in Normandy
Born in Mont-Saint-Aignan in 1934, Anquetil received his first bicycle at age four. After his family relocated to Le Bourguet, he earned the funds for a Stella bicycle by working on a strawberry farm. At age 14, he attended technical college in Sotteville to train as a metalworker. His interest in competitive cycling grew through friendships at the AC Sottevillais club, where he began training under André Boucher in 1950.

Anquetil achieved his first amateur victory at the Grand Prix Maurice Latour in May 1951. His senior amateur career progressed rapidly, highlighted by a dominant win at the Grand Prix de France time trial and a national championship title in Carcassonne. In 1952, he competed at the Helsinki Summer Olympics, contributing to a bronze medal performance in the team road race.
Mastery of the Grand Tours
By the time of his retirement, Anquetil held the record for eight Grand Tour victories. His performance in the 1961 Tour de France exemplified his calculated approach; he publicly declared his intent to take the yellow jersey on the opening day and successfully defended the lead throughout the entire event. His professional career included tenures with La Perle-Hutchinson, Helyett-Hutchinson, Saint-Raphaël-Gitane-Dunlop, Ford France-Hutchinson, and Bic.
