Born in 1953 in the same city, he developed a career that bridged urban planning, industrial design, and theatrical scenography across Italy and France, ultimately influencing the landscape of cultural infrastructure until his death in 2024.
Early Career and French Years
After graduating from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1982, Rota refined his practice through apprenticeships with Franco Albini and Vittorio Gregotti, the latter involving work on the University of Calabria. His transition to Paris in the early 1980s marked a productive period of international development. He collaborated with Gae Aulenti on the Musée d’Orsay project, which expanded his focus toward integrated architectural concepts. Throughout his two decades in France, Rota also worked in theatre design, collaborating with director Bernard Sobel on the 1988 production of Hécube.

Upon returning to Italy in 1996, Rota served as a City Councillor for urban quality in Milan. His portfolio includes diverse projects such as the renovation of the Nantes town centre (1992–1995), the Foro Italico promenade in Palermo, and the Boscolo Exedra Hotel in Milan. His design versatility spanned multimedia libraries in Anzola and San Sito, the Triennale Design Museum, and commercial commissions for Roberto Cavalli. His studio functioned as a repository of his professional evolution, housing a collection of maquettes, literature, and gathered objects.
Academic Contributions
Rota maintained a consistent role in education, teaching design at the École d’Architecture UP8 Paris-Belleville, the University of Ferrara, and the IED in Milan. He served as the director of the Design Department at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan starting in 2010, while also acting as a scientific advisor for the institution. He participated in academic workshops at the Università IUAV di Venezia and delivered seminars at several global institutions, including Columbia University.
