Iuliu Hațieganu

Romanian physician (1885–1959)

The first lecture delivered in the Romanian language at the University of Cluj was presented by Iuliu Hațieganu in 1919, marking the formal beginning of Romanian-language medical higher education in Transylvania. This milestone event occurred after he helped establish the institution, setting the foundation for a clinical school that eventually adopted his name.

Clinical Research and Medical Education

Born in Dârja in 1885, Hațieganu pursued studies at the Franz Joseph University, completing his doctorate in 1910. His early professional research gained notice in 1914 following a study on alimentary galactosuria. As a university teacher at the "King Ferdinand I" University, he focused on internal medicine and tuberculosis. He advocated for clinical teaching models centered on direct observation of patients, often prioritizing the examination of peasants and workers to refine diagnostic accuracy.

Political Engagement and Public Health

Hațieganu participated in the Great National Assembly of December 1, 1918, at Alba Iulia. Following this, he chaired the first Congress of Transylvanian Romanian doctors in Sibiu on January 29, 1919. His administrative career included serving as rector of the University of Cluj. Between April and July 1931, he held the position of Minister of State. He also briefly served as Minister of Health, though he resigned over disagreements regarding the integration of physical education into the ministry's portfolio.

Integration of Physical Education

A central component of his administrative philosophy involved the mandatory incorporation of physical activity into higher education. Believing that physical training was essential for character development and health, he founded a youth sports park spanning 25 hectares along the Someș River in Cluj between 1930 and 1932. He supported these initiatives by hiring specialized teachers and publishing an educational journal to promote physical health as a foundational aspect of student life.

Architectural Interest and Legacy

Beyond his medical and pedagogical work, Hațieganu maintained an interest in architecture. His work in this field reached an international platform when he participated in the architecture competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics. A member of the Romanian Academy, he spent his final years in Cluj-Napoca, where he died in 1959. He was buried at the Házsongárd Cemetery.
