Early Career and Education
Born in 1942, Fainé studied at the University of Barcelona, eventually earning a doctorate in Economic Sciences. He also attended Harvard University and the IESE Business School to refine his administrative capabilities. His professional banking career started in 1964 at Banco Atlántico, followed by a general manager role at Banco de Asunción in Paraguay between 1969 and 1973. Throughout the 1970s, he held various positions at Banca Riva y García, Banca Jover, and Banco Unión, progressively moving into roles with greater responsibility.

In 1982, Fainé joined Caixa de Pensions, later known as La Caixa. He served as deputy general manager starting in 1982, later becoming executive deputy general manager in 1991. By April 1999, he was appointed general director, eventually assuming the presidency in June 2007. He oversaw the restructuring of the organization, leading to his role as chairperson of the La Caixa Foundation, which evolved into a significant global philanthropic entity.
Corporate Leadership and Institutional Roles
Beyond his primary banking duties, Fainé held numerous board memberships and leadership positions. He served as vice president of Telefónica, Abertis, and Grupo Agbar, and assumed the presidency of Gas Natural—later Naturgy—in 2016. His professional engagements include the Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks, the European Savings Banks Group, and the Spanish Confederation of Managers and Executives. He also maintains memberships in the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences and the Royal European Academy of Doctors.
