Early Training and Education
Born in 1884 in the village of Sofiivka, Brodsky pursued formal training at the Hrekov Odesa Art school before moving to the capital. He attended the Higher Art School at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he studied under the guidance of Ilya Repin for five years. His formative years coincided with the final stages of the Russian Empire and the subsequent transition into the Soviet era.

In 1934, Brodsky assumed the position of Director at the All-Russian Academy of Arts. During his five-year tenure, he operated a personal art workshop that proved influential for a new generation of painters. His students included notable artists such as Aleksandr Laktionov, Nikolai Timkov, Yuri Neprintsev, Piotr Belousov, Piotr Vasiliev, and Mikhail Kozell. This period marked a significant concentration of his efforts on institutional leadership and pedagogical instruction.
Collecting and Institutional Legacy
Beyond his output as a painter and graphic artist, Brodsky was a dedicated collector. He acquired works by figures including Vasily Surikov, Valentin Serov, Isaak Levitan, Mikhail Vrubel, and Boris Kustodiev. In 1930, he founded the Berdyansk Art Museum, donating approximately 200 paintings from his private collection to the institution. His apartment on Arts Square in Saint Petersburg, which held his remaining collection, was designated a national museum following his death in 1939. He is buried at the Volkovo Cemetery on the Writer's Walkways.
