Early Life and Education
Born in 1946 in Saint Petersburg, she was the daughter of parents from Warsaw and Kiev who met in Samarkand. The family relocated to Warsaw in 1947. She pursued academic interests alongside her athletic training, eventually graduating from the University of Warsaw in 1970 with a Master of Science degree in economics.

Her Olympic debut occurred at the 1964 Tokyo Games, where she earned silver in the 200 meters and long jump, and gold as part of the 4x100 meter relay team. She later achieved individual gold medals in the 200 meters in 1968 and the 400 meters in 1976. In 1974, she became the first woman to break the 50-second barrier in the 400-meter event. Across her career, she accumulated ten medals in European Championships and set 38 national records.
Professional Administration
Following her retirement from active competition, she transitioned into sports governance. She served as president of the Polish Athletic Association from 1997 until 2009. Her administrative influence expanded to the international stage when she became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1998 and was elected to the IAAF Council in 2005.
Recognition and Legacy
Her contributions to athletics were recognized with numerous high-level honors, including the Order of the White Eagle awarded in 2016 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2014. She received the Polish Sportspersonality of the Year award four times. She passed away in Warsaw in 2018 and is interred at the Powązki Military Cemetery.
