Ip Kai-man, widely recognized as Ip Man, served as a pivotal grandmaster who brought the practice of Wing Chun to prominence within British Hong Kong. Born in 1893 in Foshan, he spent his formative years in a wealthy household, receiving a traditional education before dedicating his life to the discipline and instruction of martial arts.
Early Martial Arts Training
Ip began his study of Wing Chun at age nine or thirteen under the instruction of Chan Wah-shun. As the sixteenth and final student of Chan, Ip trained for three years until his instructor suffered a stroke in 1909. He further refined his technique under Ng Chung-sok, a senior student of Chan, before relocating to Hong Kong at age sixteen to attend St. Stephen's College.

By 1916, at age twenty-four, Ip returned to Foshan. He served as a police officer under the Nationalist government, where he instructed subordinates and acquaintances in his martial techniques. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he resided with Kwok Fu. Following the 1949 conclusion of the Chinese Civil War, Ip migrated to Hong Kong, leaving his wife, Cheung Wing-sing, and daughter in Foshan.
Teaching and Legacy in Hong Kong
Upon arriving in Hong Kong in 1950, Ip encountered significant financial instability and personal hardship. To generate income, he began teaching Wing Chun to members of the Restaurant Workers' Association, eventually expanding his school to locations on Castle Peak Road and Lee Tat Street. In 1967, he co-founded the Ving Tsun Athletic Association to formalize the art and manage his financial obligations. Ip died in 1972 and is buried in Fanling.
