The original vocal performance for the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar features Ian Gillan in the role of Jesus. This contribution is one of many markers in a career defined by his tenure as the lead singer and lyricist for the rock band Deep Purple, a role he has held across several non-consecutive periods since 1969.
Early Musical Development
Born in 1945 in Chiswick, Middlesex, Gillan attended Ark Acton Academy before pursuing music. His initial exposure to the industry involved fronting local acts, including the Javelins and the soul group Wainwright's Gentlemen. He joined Episode Six in 1965, a period that proved significant as it established his long-standing songwriting partnership with bassist Roger Glover. He departed Episode Six in 1969 to pursue a shift toward the harder rock sound he sought.
