Iakob Nikoladze was born at Kutaisi in 1876. His recorded nationality is Democratic Republic of Georgia. He trained at Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry and Hrekov Odesa Art school.
Around the turn of the twentieth century the movements arrived in quick succession, each defining itself against the last.
He worked as sculptor, university teacher and painter.
A painting outlives the argument about it, which is the only durable form of an artistic reputation.
Recognition followed: Stalin Prize (1946), Order of Lenin, Medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" and Order of the Badge of Honour (1936).
That the work was made in Democratic Republic of Georgia shaped it: artistic traditions, academies and the galleries that decide what is seen have never been evenly distributed.
Iakob Nikoladze died in 1951, aged 75. The work remains, hanging in collections that outlived both the artist and the market that first priced it.
