Jan-Håkan Haugland, known as Ian, joined the Swedish rock group Europe during the summer of 1984. He stepped into the role of drummer, replacing Tony Reno just as the band prepared for a period of international prominence. His tenure spans multiple decades, bridging the band's initial peak in the 1980s and their ongoing activity through the early 21st century.
Early Background and Professional Beginnings
Born in Nordreisa Municipality, Norway, on 13 August 1964, Haugland relocated with his family to the Stockholm suburb of Märsta, Sweden, when he was eight months old. He holds citizenship in both Norway and Sweden. Before his association with Europe, Haugland developed his professional skills in various musical ensembles. His early experience included a period with the band Trilogy, which featured Leif Edling, who later gained recognition with Candlemass. Additionally, he performed as part of Yngwie J. Malmsteen's band, Rising Force.

Haugland became a permanent member of Europe in 1984. He provided the percussion for several of the band’s commercial successes, including the albums The Final Countdown (1986), Out of This World (1988), and Prisoners in Paradise (1991). Following the band's hiatus beginning in 1992, Haugland contributed to their return in the 2000s. His later discography with the group includes Start from the Dark (2004), Secret Society (2006), Last Look at Eden (2009), Bag of Bones (2012), War of Kings (2015), Walk the Earth (2017), and Come This Madness (2026).
Collaborative Work and Media Projects
Beyond his primary role in Europe, Haugland maintained a career as a session drummer and collaborator. He worked extensively with figures such as John Norum and Glenn Hughes, appearing on albums including From Now On... and Burning Japan Live. His session work further involved acts like Brazen Abbot, Clockwise, and Last Autumn's Dream. In 1998, he contributed a cover of "Changes" to the Ozzified tribute album. Outside of recording studios and touring, Haugland serves as a radio host for the Swedish station 106.7 FM Rockklassiker.
