A 1966 nationwide design competition served as the launching point for Hossein Amanat, leading to the creation of the Shahyad Tower in Tehran. Originally conceived as a monument to the Pahlavi dynasty, the structure was later renamed the Azadi Tower in 1979. This project established his architectural reputation, connecting traditional Persian motifs with modern structural requirements.
Early Career and Education
Educated at the University of Tehran, Amanat developed his craft as a student of Hooshang Seyhoun. His early professional years in Iran included commissions for the Sharif University of Technology and the Faculty of Business Management at the University of Tehran. During this period, he focused on integrating distinct historical Persian architectural styles into contemporary civic and academic infrastructure.

Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Amanat moved to Canada in 1980. A member of the Baháʼí Faith, he navigated the shift from working within a state-sponsored environment in Iran to managing international commissions. His portfolio expanded to include institutional projects like the Jiang'an Library for Sichuan University and the media library for the Beijing Broadcasting Institute, as well as high-rise condominiums in cities such as San Diego and Burnaby.
Baháʼí Architectural Contributions
A significant portion of Amanat's practice involves design for the Baháʼí Faith. He completed the three administrative buildings known as the Baháʼí Arc in Haifa, Israel, and the House of Worship in Samoa in 1984. In 2019, the Universal House of Justice named him the architect for the Shrine of ʻAbdu'l-Bahá near Acre, Israel.
