A PhD thesis completed in 1962 at the Free University of Berlin titled Ordnungsfähigkeit topologischer Räume marked the professional entry of Horst Herrlich into the field of mathematics. Born in 1937 in Berlin, he dedicated his career to advancing topology and category theory, eventually establishing himself as a significant figure in the development of categorical topology.
Academic Formation
Herrlich conducted his initial academic studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1962, he finished his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Karl Peter Grotemeyer and Alexander Dinghas. Three years later, he returned to the same institution to complete his habilitation, focusing on the study of E-compact spaces, a concept originally introduced by Stanisław Mrówka in 1958.

In 1971, Herrlich began a long tenure as a professor of mathematics at the University of Bremen, where he remained until 2002. His research concentrated on the synthesis of general topology and category theory. This specialization led to his role as an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Vancouver in 1974. Beyond his independent research, he contributed to the broader field by serving on the editorial staff for the third volume of the collected works of Felix Hausdorff, titled Deskriptive Mengenlehre und Topologie.
Notable Publications
Herrlich authored or co-authored several key texts that defined his sub-field. His 1968 work, Topologische Reflexionen und Coreflexionen, was published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics series. In 1973, he co-authored Category Theory: An Introduction with George E. Strecker. Later publications included the 1990 text Abstract and Concrete Categories, co-written with Jiří Adámek and George E. Strecker, and his 2006 work regarding the Axiom of Choice. He also produced several German-language textbooks, including Einführung in die Topologie: Metrische Räume and two volumes on topology published in 1986 and 1988.
