Hossam Hassan

Egyptian association football player and coach

With 69 goals across 177 international appearances, Hossam Hassan stands as the all-time leading scorer for the Egyptian national football team. Born in Helwan in 1966, this prolific striker transitioned into an extensive managerial career, eventually taking charge of the national side and steering them to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Early Career and Al Ahly

Hassan made his first-team debut for Al Ahly SC in Cairo at age 18. Over a 16-year tenure, he secured 25 titles, including 11 league championships. His career included brief spells abroad, most notably at Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland, where he scored four goals in a single 1991–92 UEFA Cup match against Celtic. In 2000, at age 34, he departed Al Ahly for Al Ain SCC.

Zamalek and Domestic Success

His tenure at the Cairo club included winning the 2002 CAF Champions League and the 2003 CAF Super Cup. He scored 50 goals for the club in all competitions before moving to Al Masry, Tersana, and Al-Ittihad Al-Sakndary.

International Achievements

A veteran of seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, Hassan won the 1986 title and led the team to victory in 1998, finishing as joint-top scorer with seven goals. In 2001, FIFA recognized him as the world's most-capped international male player at the time, earning him the 'World Dean of Players' armband. He served as captain at the 2006 African Cup of Nations, winning his third continental trophy at age 40.

Coaching Transitions

Hassan began managing in 2008 with Al Masry, followed by roles at Itesalat and Zamalek. His career included international management with the Jordan national team during 2014 World Cup qualification. After managing several clubs including Pyramids, Smouha, and multiple stints at Al Masry and Al Ittihad Alexandria, he was appointed manager of the Egyptian national team in February 2024.

Modern National Team Leadership

In his tenure as Egypt's head coach, Hassan guided the squad to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals. He later led the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in history, falling to Argentina in the Round of 16. Following the loss, he renewed his contract with the national team until 2030.
