Early Background and Education
Born in Jerusalem on December 17, 1967, Herzi Halevi was named after an uncle who died during the Six-Day War. He was educated at Himmelfarb High School and participated in the Tzofim religious scouts. Later, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and business management from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed a master's degree in international resource management at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

Halevi began his military service in 1985 by volunteering for the Paratroopers Brigade. He advanced through roles as a platoon leader and company commander, including a period within the special forces unit Sayeret Matkal. By 2005, he assumed command of the Menashe Regional Brigade, followed by a promotion to commander of the Paratroopers Brigade in 2007. In 2009, he attained the rank of brigadier general, eventually commanding the 91st Division and the IDF Command and Staff College.
Strategic Leadership Roles
Appointed head of military intelligence in 2014, Halevi served in that capacity for four years. During this time, he facilitated enhanced cooperation between the Israel Defense Forces and intelligence agencies such as the Mossad and Shin Bet. In 2018, he assumed command of the Southern Command, overseeing activities around the Gaza Strip. He was appointed deputy chief of staff in July 2021 before ascending to the top military post in 2023.
