Early Career and Brazilian Success
Born in Aliança on 29 May 1985, Hernanes spent nine years in the São Paulo academy system starting in 2001. After a 2006 loan spell at Santo André, he returned to São Paulo, where he secured the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles in 2007 and 2008. His performance in 2008 earned him the Prêmio Craque do Brasileirão best player award, and by early 2009, British media identified him as one of the world's most promising players.

In August 2010, Hernanes moved to Lazio for €11.1 million. He proved effective immediately, scoring 11 goals in his debut season, a record return for a Lazio midfielder at the time. He later contributed to the club's 2013 Coppa Italia victory. In January 2014, he transferred to Inter Milan for €20 million, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal. By August 2015, he joined Juventus for €11 million, winning the domestic double during his first season with the club.
International Competition and Style
Hernanes represented Brazil in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where the team earned a bronze medal. He was part of the squad that won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and played during the 2014 FIFA World Cup on home soil, finishing in fourth place. On the field, he was recognized for his technical skill, including a signature double step, and his capability to strike the ball powerfully with either foot from distance.
Final Years
Following a stint with Hebei China Fortune in 2017, Hernanes returned to Brazil to rejoin São Paulo on loan, providing a critical boost during the team's relegation battle. He signed a permanent three-year deal with the club in December 2018. After a final season with Sport Club do Recife starting in August 2021, he officially announced his retirement from professional football on 2 May 2022.
