Performing the first cochlear implantation in Poland and Central Europe in 1992, Henryk Skarżyński established himself as a central figure in otolaryngology. Born in 1954 in Rosochate Kościelne, he developed surgical programs that allowed patients with partial hearing loss to retain their existing auditory capacity while benefiting from advanced implant technology.
Academic and Professional Foundation
Skarżyński completed his medical training at the Medical University of Warsaw, graduating in 1979. He advanced through the academic hierarchy, securing a PhD in 1983 and a habilitated PhD in 1989. By 1995, he reached the rank of full Professor of Medicine. His institutional influence expanded as he founded the Cochlear Center in 1993, followed by the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing in 1996 and the International Centre of Hearing and Speech in Kajetany in 2003.

His surgical practice focused on pioneering methods for restoring hearing. In 2002, he performed the world's first cochlear implant surgery on an adult with partial deafness, later repeating this success with a child in 2004. Beyond surgery, he developed specialized equipment, including the Kuba Mikro audiometer and the Audiometer S. His work in telemedicine resulted in the Home Rehabilitation Clinic and a remote system for supervising implant settings known as Telefitting.
National and International Recognition
The Polish state has recognized his medical contributions with several honors, including the Order of the White Eagle in 2024 and the Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2012. He also received the Order of Merit from Ukraine in 2010.
