Stachel completed his early education in Trofaiach and Leoben. By 1965, he earned his diploma at both the University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology, qualifying as a teacher in mathematics and descriptive geometry. Under the supervision of Fritz Hohenberg, he focused his doctoral studies on mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, receiving his doctorate in 1969. He achieved his habilitation at the Technical University of Graz in 1971 before transitioning to the Vienna University of Technology in 1980.

He has authored or co-authored several significant volumes, including 'The Universe of Conics' and 'The Universe of Quadrics.'
