Helge Lund

Helge Lund, a Norwegian businessman, managed several major international energy and healthcare corporations during his tenure as a chief executive and chairman. Born in 1962 in Asker, Norway, he cultivated a career spanning decades of corporate leadership, moving from consultancy and political advisory roles to oversight of global entities including Statoil and BP.

Early Education and Career Beginnings

Lund pursued his academic training in business management, graduating from the Norwegian School of Economics in 1987. He furthered his credentials with a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD in France. His initial professional experience included work as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company. Additionally, he served as a political adviser for the Conservative Party within the Stortinget, the Norwegian parliament, before transitioning to industry roles at Hafslund Nycomed in 1993.

Industrial Leadership in Norway

In 1997, Lund moved into an executive role as vice president of Nycomed Pharma. He joined Aker RGI in 1999 and subsequently became the CEO of Aker Kværner in 2002. By 2004, he assumed the position of CEO at Statoil, succeeding Olav Fjell. Following the 2007 merger of Statoil with the oil and gas division of Norsk Hydro to form StatoilHydro, Lund retained his leadership role, which he held until his resignation in 2014.

Transition to Global Corporate Roles

Lund joined the management team of BG Group in early 2015. His compensation package there faced significant shareholder scrutiny, resulting in a reduction of his share award. After Royal Dutch Shell completed a takeover of BG Group, Lund departed with substantial compensation, including shares and salary for his 11-month tenure. He later joined the board of directors for Schlumberger in 2016.

Directorship at BP and Novo Nordisk

In 2018, it was announced that Lund would join the board of BP. He succeeded Carl-Henric Svanberg as chairman of BP on 1 January 2019, a position he occupied until October 2025. Simultaneously, he took on the role of chairman for the Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk in 2018. His time at BP included controversial public activities, such as his 2023 participation in a ceremony in Azerbaijan honoring Heydar Aliyev.
