Hellen Obiri holds the distinction of being the only woman to secure world titles across indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country disciplines. Born in Kisii, Kenya, in 1989, she transitioned from a secondary school sprinter into a formidable long-distance specialist, ultimately becoming a mainstay of international athletics while serving as a member of the Kenya Defence Forces.
Early Development and Military Service
Raised as the fourth of six children, Obiri began her journey as a 200 and 400 metres sprinter at Riruta Central Secondary School in Nairobi. She paused her athletic involvement between 2006 and 2007 to focus on education before committing to military training. After graduating from the Kenya Defence Forces Recruit Training School in 2009, she began her competitive distance career. She maintains her affiliation with the KDF, balancing professional service with a rigorous racing schedule.
