Rising from the Fairhair dynasty as the son of Eric Bloodaxe and Gunnhild, he navigated a volatile political landscape to secure power amidst constant conflict with his own kin and regional rivals.
Ascension and Conflict
Harald began his pursuit of the throne following the death of his father in 954. Allied with his uncle, King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark, he engaged in protracted warfare against King Haakon the Good. Major confrontations included the Battle of Rastarkalv in 955 and the Battle of Fitjar in 961. Following the death of Haakon at Fitjar, Harald emerged as the preeminent leader among his brothers, assuming the role of Monarch of Norway.

Once established, Harald sought to centralize his rule, which initially suffered from limited influence outside Western Norway. He systematically eliminated local leaders, including Sigurd Haakonsson, Tryggve Olafsson, and Gudrød Bjørnsson. By 962, these maneuvers allowed him to extend his reach as far north as Hålogaland. Beyond domestic politics, he prioritized control over coastal trade routes and launched a Viking expedition to Bjarmaland, situated in modern-day Arkhangelsk.
Final Years and Downfall
Harald eventually distanced himself from the influence of his uncle, Harald Bluetooth. This independence proved precarious. In 970, he was lured into Denmark and killed in the Limfjord at Hals. The assassination was orchestrated by Haakon Sigurdsson, the son of the late Sigurd Haakonsson, as retribution for his father's death. The remaining brothers fled, enabling Harald Bluetooth to reclaim control over Norway and install Haakon Sigurdsson as his vassal.
