A diploma from the University of Stuttgart in 1956 launched Hans Mezger into Porsche's Works 1 development department, where he began a tenure spanning nearly four decades. His engineering contributions defined the technical evolution of the manufacturer, ranging from the valve train of the Carrera engine to the championship-winning powerplants that dominated international circuit racing through the late twentieth century.
Early Career and Formula 1
Upon joining Porsche in 1956, Mezger focused initially on the Porsche 547 Carrera engine. By 1959, he transitioned to the design department to assist in creating the type 753 flat-eight engine intended for the Porsche 804 Formula 1 car. His engagement with Formula 1 programs continued periodically throughout the 1960s and 1980s, eventually leading to his management of the TAG TTE PO1 V6 engine, which powered McLaren MP4/2 chassis to multiple Formula One world championships.

During the 1960s, Mezger led the Race Design office responsible for the development of the 904, 906, 910, 907, 908, and 917 series. He pioneered Porsche's application of turbocharging, exemplified by the 1,600 hp 917/30. This expertise extended to the 935 and 936 models, which secured several Le Mans victories between 1976 and 1981. The 2.65-litre flat-6 engine, derived from the 935, powered the 956 and 962 Group C and IMSA race cars, sustaining Porsche's long-term success in endurance competition.
Engineering Legacy and Retirement
Mezger retired from Porsche in 1994, though his mechanical designs remained in use for high-performance production vehicles. His dry-sump engine architecture, originally proven in racing environments, was integrated into the 911 GT1 for the 1998 Le Mans win. Subsequently, variants of this design were utilized in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms for the 996 GT3 and GT2 models. Despite the failure of the 3512 V12 engine built for the Footwork FA12, his legacy remains grounded in the durability and adaptability of his flat-six engine configurations.
