Early Career and Borussia Mönchengladbach
Netzer began his development at 1. FC Mönchengladbach before transferring to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1963. Under manager Hennes Weisweiler, he helped the club secure promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965. During his decade at the club, he played 230 league games and scored 82 goals, driving the team to Bundesliga titles in 1970 and 1971. His final appearance for the club saw him come off the bench during extra time in the 1973 DFB-Pokal final to score the winning goal against 1. FC Köln.

In 1973, Netzer signed with Real Madrid, becoming the club's first German player. His spell in Spain lasted until 1976, during which time he secured two La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey victories. Internationally, he earned 37 caps for West Germany between 1965 and 1975, contributing six goals. He was a key figure in the squad that won UEFA Euro 1972 and participated in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He concluded his active playing career at Grasshopper Club Zürich in 1977.

Netzer transitioned into management at Hamburger SV, serving as general manager during an era of significant success that included three league titles and the 1983 European Cup victory over Juventus. Following his time in Hamburg, he established an advertising agency in Zürich. He later expanded his career into broadcasting, notably working as a pundit for ARD alongside Gerhard Delling for 13 years. His professional contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the German Footballer of the Year award in 1972 and 1973.
