Academic Progression
After receiving his doctorate under the supervision of Heinrich Matzat, Malle pursued further academic development at Heidelberg University, where he completed his habilitation in 1991. His professional career saw him move into professorial roles, first at Kassel University starting in 1998. Since 2005, he has held a professorship at the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern.

His research addresses significant problems in finite-group representation theory, specifically working on local-global conjectures. He has focused on Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture, the Alperin weight conjecture, and the Alperin-McKay conjecture. Furthermore, his work examines the Cohen-Lenstra heuristic concerning the structure of class groups of quadratic number fields and the inverse problem of Galois theory.
The Spetses Program
In 1993, Malle began a collaborative project with Michel Broué and Jean Michel. Named after the Greek island of Spetses where the initiative started, the program explored whether every finite complex reflection group could be viewed as a Weyl group of an object analogous to a finite group of Lie type. The researchers designated these theoretical constructs as Spetses. Malle presented on this program as an invited speaker at the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin.

Throughout his career, Malle has authored numerous works with international collaborators. Key publications include a 2024 paper on Brauer's height zero conjecture in the Annals of Mathematics, and the 2011 Cambridge University Press volume Linear algebraic groups and Finite Groups of Lie Type, co-authored with Donna Testerman. He also published the book Inverse Galois Theory with Heinrich Matzat in 1999.
