Guillermo Ochoa retired from professional football following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, concluding a career that included over 750 senior club appearances. Early Career at Club América
Ochoa made his professional debut with América in 2004 at age 18. Under head coach Mario Carrillo, he secured the Clausura 2005 league title, the 2005 Campeón de Campeones, and the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. His performance led to back-to-back Golden Glove awards for the 2006–07 season. By 2007, he became the first Mexican player nominated for the Ballon d'Or, finishing 30th in global voting. In 2011, Ochoa moved to Europe to join Ajaccio in France. Despite being one of the most scored-on goalkeepers during his first season, he was voted Player of the Season by fans for two consecutive years. His time in Europe included stints with Malaga and Granada in Spain, and Standard Liège in Belgium, where he won the 2017–18 Belgian Cup. Later in his career, he played for Salernitana in Italy, AVS in Portugal, and AEL Limassol in Cyprus.
International Milestones
Ochoa earned his first cap for Mexico at age 20 in a friendly against Hungary. His international participation includes six World Cup appearances, two FIFA Confederations Cups, and two Olympic tournaments, where he secured a bronze medal in 2020. He holds the record as the most successful player in the history of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, having won the tournament six times. He finished his international career after Mexico's elimination in the round of 16 during the 2026 World Cup.
