Guillaume V acceded to the throne as Grand Duke of Luxembourg on 3 October 2025 following the abdication of his father, Grand Duke Henri. Born in 1981 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital, he spent two decades as the heir apparent, serving as the Hereditary Grand Duke while preparing for his constitutional role as head of state.
Education and Military Training
His primary education took place in Lorentzweiler followed by secondary schooling at the Lycée Robert-Schuman. He attended Swiss boarding institutions, including Institut Le Rosey and Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil, completing the French baccalaureate in 2001. Higher education included time at University College and Brunel University London. He studied philosophy and anthropology at Institut Philanthropos, later earning a bachelor’s degree in humanities and political science from the Institut Albert le Grand in 2009. His military career began at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst between 2001 and 2002. He served in the Luxembourg Army, holding the rank of colonel, and participated in postgraduate training at the Royal College of Defence Studies from 2018 to 2019.

From 2005 until 2024, he served as a member of the Council of State. His professional experience includes internships with the Belgian Chemical Union, Deutsche Bank, and ArcelorMittal. He worked at the European Commission and the Permanent Representation of Luxembourg to the European Union in 2012. Before his accession, he acted as honorary chairman for the Board of Economic Development of the Grand Duchy. His humanitarian interests include long-term support for the Kräizbierg Foundation, which aids individuals with disabilities, and his involvement with the World Scout Foundation to promote international scouting initiatives.
Transition of Power
In June 2024, Grand Duke Henri announced the appointment of his son as lieutenant-representative, a formal step facilitating the eventual transfer of executive power. The investiture occurred on 8 October 2024, involving ceremonies at the Grand Ducal Palace and the Chamber of Deputies. This process concluded when the abdication of his father finalized his status as the monarch of Luxembourg in October 2025.
