He began his political service in 1984, securing a seat in the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt, where he remained active for four years. In 1999, he was elected to the Swiss National Council. He served in the national legislature based in Bern until 2003.
Legal Proceedings and Final Years
In 2002, the public prosecutor's office in Basel indicted Zäch on charges of breach of trust and multiple instances of mismanagement. The case concerned the loss of 60 million Swiss francs from the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation, with allegations that funds were diverted for personal enrichment. An initial conviction in 2003 resulted in a two-year prison sentence. Following an appeal, the judicial process concluded in 2005 with a 16-month suspended sentence. Zäch died in St. Gallen on 16 February 2026, at the age of 90.
