Born in Warsaw in 1942, he evolved into a central figure in computer science, specifically regarding formal language, automata theory, and natural computing. Academic Foundation and Appointments
Rozenberg completed his initial education at the Warsaw University of Technology, earning Master and Engineer degrees. He subsequently secured a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1968. His career includes faculty positions at several institutions, including the University of Antwerp and the University of Colorado Boulder. Since 1979, he has served as a professor of computer science at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

His research focus encompasses graph transformations, concurrent systems, and natural computing. Rozenberg has acted as an editor for over 100 books and numerous special journal issues. He played a key role in the creation of comprehensive handbooks on formal languages, graph grammars, and membrane computing. Furthermore, he serves on the editorial or advisory boards of approximately 20 scientific journals and founded several book series dedicated to theoretical computer science.
Professional Leadership and Distinctions
From 1985 to 1994, Rozenberg served as the president of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science, the longest tenure in that role. His leadership extended to the International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation and Engineering, the European Molecular Computing Consortium, and the European Educational Forum. In 2017, he received the distinction of Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Turku, the Technical University of Berlin, and the University of Bologna.
