Domestic Success at Stal Mielec
Born in Malbork in 1950, Lato began his association football career at Stal Mielec in 1966. Over a 14-year tenure, he guided the club from the Second Division to the top tier of Polish football. During his time there, Stal Mielec secured the Ekstraklasa title in both 1973 and 1976. Lato proved to be a prolific striker, amassing 111 goals in 272 appearances and earning the league's top scorer honors in the 1972-73 and 1974-75 seasons.

Lato earned 100 caps for the Poland national team between 1971 and 1984, becoming the first Polish player to reach the century mark. Following his success in 1974, he competed in the 1978 tournament in Argentina and the 1982 tournament in Spain, where he helped Poland achieve another third-place finish. He concluded his international career with 45 goals, the third-highest total in Polish national team history.
Professional Tenure Abroad
After leaving Poland in 1980, Lato pursued opportunities with foreign clubs. He played in Belgium for K.S.C. Lokeren, recording 12 goals over two seasons. In 1982, he moved to Mexico to join Atlante F.C., where he contributed 15 goals. His playing career eventually transitioned to amateur football in Hamilton, Ontario, before he retired from professional competition in 1991.
Administration and Political Life
Beyond his playing career, Lato entered the political sphere, serving as a member of the Senate of the Republic of Poland for the Rzeszów region between 2001 and 2005. In 2008, he was elected president of the Polish Football Association, overseeing the preparations for the 2012 UEFA European Championship before leaving the post in 2012.
