Construction of the chapels at the Sacro Monte di Varese began in 1604 under the direction of Giuseppe Bernascone. Professional Training and Early Projects
Born in 1565 in Varese, Bernascone received instruction from Pellegrino Tibaldi, a Milanese architect who operated under the patronage of Federico Borromeo. His early career included the design of the façade for the Church of Sant'Antonio alla Motta, a project undertaken between 1592 and 1606. During this same period, he designed the church of San Giuseppe.

Collaboration with Tibaldi on the Basilica of San Vittore in Varese occupied Bernascone between 1598 and 1630. His technical involvement centered on the presbytery, the lantern tower, and the primary bell tower. The latter structure remained incomplete during his lifetime and reached final construction in 1773, over a century after his death. Additional local work included the bell tower of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, designed between 1598 and 1600.
The Sacro Monte di Varese
The primary body of his work consists of the chapels and the church at the Sacro Monte di Varese. This extensive project commenced in 1604 and reached conclusion in 1627. Beyond his contributions in Italy, he provided design and construction oversight for the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso located in Switzerland.
Death and Legacy
Bernascone died in Varese in 1627 at the age of 62. His career unfolded during a period where architectural theory shifted toward individualized signatures and formal drawing processes. His projects within the Duchy of Milan were constrained by regional materials, specific planning standards, and the financial limitations of his benefactors.
