Professional Evolution and Garden Design
Balzaretto transitioned from his early academic training to specialize in the creation and refurbishment of private gardens. His portfolio includes the landscaping for Villa Borromeo d'Adda in Arcore, alongside projects for Villa Visconti Castiglione Maineri at Cassinetta di Lugagnano and Villa Sironi-Marelli at Robecco sul Naviglio. He also managed the gardens and structural refurbishment of Villa Andrea Ponti in Varese, contributing to the site now identified as Ville Ponti.

His work in Milan demonstrated his role in the city's structural development. In 1858, he received the commission to design the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, situated near Porta Venezia, which he laid out following the English landscape style. Later, in 1869, he oversaw the construction of Ca' de Sass, which served as the inaugural headquarters for the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde.
Institutional Contributions and Recognition
Beyond private commissions, Balzaretto engaged in public and academic work. He performed a restructuring of the Pia casa degli incurabili at Abbiategrasso in 1873 and managed design elements at Villa Torneamento, including its towers and boundary walls. His contributions to the field were recognized by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Genova, where he served as a professor of architecture and design. On 14 August 1871, he became a knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
