Early Mercantile Career
Born in 1280 into a merchant family, Villani became a member of the Arte di Calimala guild by 1300. He spent the early 14th century building business acumen as a shareholder and factor for the Peruzzi bank, traveling through France, Switzerland, and Flanders. By 1322, he shifted his interests to the Buonaccorsi firm, becoming a co-director in 1324. These roles required sophisticated financial maneuvering, including the execution of exchange contracts in trade hubs like Bruges.

Upon returning to Florence in 1307, Villani entered local government, serving as a prior in 1316, 1317, and 1321. He managed the city mint, cataloging coin production, and oversaw infrastructure projects like the city walls. His diplomatic work included negotiations with Pisa and Lucca and a mission to Bologna. During the 1328 famine, he served as a magistrate of provisioning, importing Sicilian grain and regulating bakery operations to stabilize the local food supply.
Chronicle and Bankruptcy
Villani combined his administrative work with writing, recording civic construction and international trade data. His career suffered during the financial collapse of major banking houses; as a partner in the failing Buonaccorsi firm, he was imprisoned in 1346. He blamed the losses on unpaid loans to Edward III of England, though modern analysis suggests smaller capital reserves played a larger role. While documenting the onset of the Black Death, Villani succumbed to the plague in 1348.
