The Giovanni Treccani Institute began its mission on 18 February 1925 to compile the Enciclopedia Italiana, a comprehensive reference work that eventually bore the publisher's name. As an industrialist with deep interests in cultural patronage, Treccani diverted his commercial success into long-term intellectual projects that defined his contribution to the Italian public sphere during the twentieth century.
Early Career and Industry
Born in 1877 in Montichiari, Giovanni Treccani entered the workforce early. He was the son of a pharmacist and left home at age 17 to pursue opportunities in the textile sector. His initial professional experiences took place in Germany, where he served as a textile worker. This period provided the practical foundation for his later transition into a major Italian textile industrialist.

Treccani reached prominence through his dual roles as an entrepreneur and a figure in the Italian political landscape. In 1924, he was appointed as a Senator of the Kingdom of Italy. Building on his influence in Rome, he established the Giovanni Treccani Institute the following year. This organization served as the vehicle for his most durable legacy: the publication of the Enciclopedia Italiana, which is now identified by his surname.
Honours and Final Years
Recognition of his contributions to labor and culture arrived through various formal channels. He received the Order of Merit for Labour for his professional efforts. In 1937, he was awarded the title of Count. Academic recognition followed in 1939 when he received an honorary degree in literature from the University of Milan. Treccani died in 1961 at the age of 84 in Milan and is buried at the monumental cemetery of that city.
