Early Career and International Debut
Giba began his professional career playing for domestic Brazilian clubs including Curitibano, Cocamar, and Minas. He made his national team debut at age 18 in 1995, immediately contributing to a South American Championship win. After an early exit in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he helped secure a 2001 World League title by defeating Italy, setting the stage for a period of sustained international success.

Coached by Bernardo Rezende, the Brazilian team entered a productive period from 2002 to 2007. Giba led the squad to its first World Championship title in 2002 after defeating Russia in a five-set final. He was instrumental in the 2004 Athens Olympics victory, earning tournament Most Valuable Player honors. His performance remained high through 2007, marked by additional individual awards at the World League and World Cup.
Late Career and Retirement
In his later years, Giba transitioned into a mentorship role while remaining team captain. He secured his third World Championship in 2010 and contributed to silver medal finishes at both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics. Following his international departure in 2012, he continued playing for clubs in Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, ultimately retiring from the sport in 2014 at age 37.
