Selected 15th overall in the 2013 NBA draft, Giannis Antetokounmpo evolved from a semi-professional player in Athens into a multiple-time league Most Valuable Player. His career trajectory is defined by a rapid transition from the Greek A2 League to becoming a centerpiece for the Milwaukee Bucks, where he secured an NBA championship in 2021.
Background and Citizenship
Born in 1994 to Nigerian parents in Athens, Antetokounmpo spent his early life in the Sepolia neighborhood. Because of his parents' status as immigrants, he lived as a stateless individual for 18 years, lacking legal documents from both Greece and Nigeria. He eventually received Greek citizenship on May 9, 2013, followed by a Nigerian passport in 2015, which confirmed his status as a dual citizen.
