Early Career and Founding
Born in Sant'Agnello in 1940, Aponte grew up within a family active in ferry services across the Bay of Naples. He trained as a ship captain and initially worked on local ferry routes. After a period in banking at the Bank of International Credit in Geneva, he returned to maritime commerce. Alongside his wife, Rafaela Aponte-Diamant, he launched Mediterranean Shipping Company, beginning operations with a lone ship.

The company grew significantly through targeted acquisitions. In 1987, the acquisition of Starlauro led to the creation of the cruise line MSC Crociere. Further expansion followed in 1995 with the purchase of SNAV, which provided hydrofoil and ferry connections to major Italian islands. By 2010, Aponte acquired half of Grandi Navi Veloci, and the following year, he bought majority stakes in Bluvacanze and Cisalpina Tour, continuing with the purchase of Caremar in 2015.
Leadership Transition and Recent Activity
In 2014, Aponte stepped down as CEO and president of MSC, passing these responsibilities to his son, Diego Aponte. He transitioned into the role of executive chairman. By April 2026, the Aponte family finalized a transfer of ownership to Diego Aponte and Alexa Aponte Vago, who serves as the company's CFO. Despite this handover, he maintains his status as executive chairman, recently involving himself in a $19 billion port deal with Li Ka-shing in 2025.
Professional Honours
Aponte’s contributions to the maritime sector have received formal recognition. In 2013, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano awarded him the Order of Merit for Labour. Earlier, in 2009, he received an award for Neapolitan Excellence in the World from Silvio Berlusconi.
