Military Service and Early Leadership
Born in Turin in 1921, Agnelli was educated at the University of Turin and the Pinerolo Cavalry Academy. During World War II, he served in a tank regiment and later an armoured-car division. His combat experiences in North Africa earned him the War Cross for Military Valour in 1943. After the war, his grandfather’s death left the family assets under the interim management of Vittorio Valletta, while Agnelli prepared for his eventual leadership role.

Upon becoming president of Fiat in 1966, Agnelli diversified the company’s manufacturing footprint. He established international production facilities in the Soviet Union, Spain, and South America, while forming major joint ventures such as Iveco. His strategy included strategic acquisitions, bringing Ferrari and Lancia into the company fold in 1969 and 1970, and purchasing Alfa Romeo in 1986. These moves transformed Fiat into a primary European car-building force.
Political Engagement and Public Life
Agnelli balanced his industrial activities with public service. In 1974, he was elected president of Confindustria, where he engaged with labor unions to stabilize industrial relations. In 1991, he was appointed an Italian senator for life, serving on the Senate’s defence commission until his death in 2003. He maintained long-term involvement with Juventus FC and was a member of the Bilderberg Group.
