Academic Formation
Aavani completed his undergraduate studies in 1964, earning a BA in philosophy from the American University in Beirut. He continued his progression in the field at the University of Tehran, where he was awarded a master's degree in 1968. In 1976, he finalized his PhD at the same institution under the supervision of Seyyed Hossein Nasr.

For nearly three decades, Aavani directed the Institute for Research in Philosophy, holding the position from the early 1980s until 2011. Beyond his administrative work in Iran, he has engaged with the international community as a steering committee member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. He served as the inaugural president of the International Association of Islamic Philosophy and held the role of Kenan Rifai Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies at Beijing University in China. He remains active as a research fellow at the Al-Mahdi Institute.
Scholarly Contributions and Honors
His bibliography includes various explorations into philosophical and spiritual traditions. In 1976, he published Hekmat-o Honar-e Ma’navi, titled Philosophy and Spiritual Art. His later works include a collaboration with Peter Lamborn Wilson in 1998 for Nasir-I-Khusraw: Forty Poems From The Divan and a 2016 study on the philosophy of Rumi. He also served as the editor for Metaphysics and Science: Essays in the Memory of Youssef Aliabadi, released in 2005. His contributions to the humanities have been recognized by several bodies, including the Farabi Award for Humanities in 2009 and his induction into the Iranian Science and Culture Hall of Fame, known as Chehrehaye mandegar, in 2001.
